Hey there, new mamas!
Welcoming a little bundle of joy into your life is an exciting and incredible experience, but as any experienced mother will tell you… it can also be overwhelming.
Especially when it comes to figuring out what you need to keep both you AND your baby happy, healthy, and comfortable.
As a fellow mom, I've been through the newborn phase and know firsthand which items are absolute must-haves. And let’s be clear, that means for both of you. If mama is burnt out, baby will feel it.
So today, I'm sharing my top 10 essential items for your newborn baby to help make your journey into motherhood a little bit easier for you both.
#1 DIAPERS AND WIPES
This is a no brainer, but trust me, you can never have too many diapers and wipes on hand. Newborns go through an astonishing number of diaper changes EVERY day, so stock up on a variety of sizes to make sure that you're prepared for those growth spurts (they come so much faster than you think)!.
#2 ONESIES AND SLEEPERS
Jammies are more than just adorable, they’re a must have. They help with hygiene, safety, and sleep regulation. Plus, they’re useful around the clock. Soft, comfortable clothing is key for your newborn. Onesies and sleepers are perfect for everyday wear and make diaper changes a breeze.
#PROTIP: Look for zipper or snap closures for easy changing.
#3 SWADDLE BLANKETS
Swaddling helps your baby feel secure and can promote better sleep. Invest in a few high-quality, breathable swaddle blankets to keep your little one cozy and content. Here are a few options you may like from Peachy & Pear
#4 BABY CARRIER OR WRAP
Wearing your baby in a carrier or wrap lets you keep them close while keeping your hands free. This is especially useful when you need to tackle household chores or run errands and can’t find anyone to sit for you. Peachy & Pear has some options you may like.
#5 BREAST PUMP (OR FORMULA)
Whether you choose to breastfeed or use formula, having a reliable breast pump or a stock of formula is ESSENTIAL. If you’re breastfeeding, a good pump can help you build a freezer stash for times when you're away from your baby. Trust me, this is soooo important. You do NOT want to run out of milk while you’re away. Baby has to eat!
#6 BURP CLOTHS AND BIBS
It’s cute for the first few weeks, but spit-up and drool get old reeeeal fast. Unfortunately, they’re a common staple for new moms. Keep a stack of soft, absorbent burp cloths and bibs on hand to keep your baby clean (and protect your clothing)..
#7 BABY BATHTUB AND TOILETRIES
Bath time can be a sweet bonding experience with your newborn. A baby bathtub with a supportive insert can make bathing easier and safer. Don't forget the tear-free baby shampoo and gentle lotion!
#PROTIP: It’s never too early for some bath toys to distract your beautiful baby (as long as they’re 6 months old!)
#8 PACIFIERS AND TEETHING TOYS
Pacifiers can be a lifesaver when it comes to soothing a fussy baby. As your little one grows, teething toys can provide relief for sore gums and keep them entertained. And as any mom will tell you, you can never have too many pacifiers and teething toys.
#9 BABY MONITOR
A reliable baby monitor gives you peace of mind, helping you keep an eye (and ear) on your sleeping baby from another room. Look for a model with good sound and video quality, as well as night vision capabilities. This is one essential item you don’t want to skimp on.
#10 BABY TOYS
We all love toys! Even newborns can benefit from age-appropriate toys that encourage cognitive development and sensory exploration.
Soft rattles, textured books, and simple plush toys are great options for the early months.
Remember, every baby is different, and what works for one family might not work for another. Don't be afraid to try new things and find what works best for you and your little one. And don't forget to take care of yourself, mama!
A happy, well-rested parent is better equipped to handle the challenges and joys of raising a newborn.
Now that you have your essential newborn checklist, you can focus on what really matters: snuggling your sweet baby and soaking up all those precious moments.
Good luck and happy parenting!
